Rust's Component System: The Crafting Materials You Need to Know
Almost everything you craft past the early game needs components. Here's what the common ones actually do.
Once you're past the very earliest crafting recipes, almost everything in Rust is built from components — items you find scattered in boxes, barrels, and cars around the world, rather than gathered directly like wood or stone. When you want to craft something, check what components it needs and go looking for them specifically.
Radtowns and Recyclers
Components are common in Radtowns too, but be careful — you can take radiation damage there. Wear a radiation-protective suit before searching barrels and boxes in these zones, and be aware they're often full of other players looking for the same loot. Radtowns are also where you'll typically find a Recycler, which turns components back into raw materials if you'd rather have base resources than the item itself.
Not everything needs components, by the way — plenty of early-game items can be crafted with no components or blueprint required at all.
Common Components
- Scrap — common, stacks to 1,000, cannot be recycled. Used for researching items, crafting workbenches/research tables/the nail gun, and gambling for random blueprints at a workbench.
- Gears — common, stacks to 20, recycles into 13 metal fragments + 10 scrap. Used in binoculars, armored doors/double doors, ladder hatches, garage doors, external gates, flame turrets, target reactives, snap traps, vending machines, shotgun traps, and chainsaws.
- Metal Blade — common, stacks to 20, recycles into 15 metal fragments + 2 scrap. Used for metal barricades, salvaged axes/icepicks/swords, long swords, and chainsaws.
- Metal Pipe — common, stacks to 20, recycles into 1 high-quality metal + 5 scrap. Used in the double-barrel shotgun, salvaged tools, revolver, pump shotgun, bolt-action rifle, semi-auto pistol, rocket launcher and rockets, flame thrower, Python, and flame turret.
- Sewing Kit — uncommon, stacks to 20, recycles into 1 HQM + 10 scrap. Used in the AK, bolt-action rifle, MP5, custom SMG, Thompson, semi-auto rifle, pump shotgun, and Python.
- Road Signs — common, stacks to 20, recycles into 1 HQM + 5 scrap. Used for road sign armor and the salvaged cleaver.
- Rifle Body — rare, stacks to 10, recycles into 2 HQM + 25 scrap. Used for the bolt-action rifle and AK.
- SMG Body — rare, stacks to 10, recycles into 2 HQM + 15 scrap. Used for SMG-class weapons.
Where's the best place to farm components?
Barrels, standard crates, and cars found across the map are the most consistent low-risk sources. Higher-tier components (rifle body, SMG body) mostly come from military-grade crates and scientist NPCs in more dangerous zones like military tunnels or Radtowns.
Should I recycle a component or use it directly?
If you have a specific item you're trying to craft that needs it, use it directly. If you're sitting on components with no immediate crafting plan, recycling them into scrap/metal/HQM is often more useful than letting them sit unused in a box.
Why is scrap the one component that can't be recycled?
Scrap is already the "base currency" the recycler produces from everything else — it's the end of that conversion chain, which is why it has no further recycling value of its own.
Are rifle body and SMG body worth farming specifically?
If you're aiming to craft an AK or SMG-class weapon, yes — they're required components with no easy substitute, so a monument or scientist-camp run is usually necessary rather than optional once you need them.
