Recycler vs. Research Table vs. Repair Bench: What Each One Actually Does
Three different stations, three different jobs. Here's how not to mix them up.
New players sometimes confuse Rust's three main crafting-adjacent stations, since they're all monument or base fixtures involving items and materials. Each does something genuinely different.
The Recycler
Turns items and components into a percentage of their raw materials back — useful for converting junk loot you don't need into something usable, or for cashing in components you'd rather have as base resources. Can't be crafted or placed by players; only found at fixed monument locations (see our recycler locations guide).
The Research Table
Converts an item you can't yet craft, plus scrap, into a Blueprint for that item — permanently unlocking your ability to craft it (once learned) at the right workbench tier. This is how you expand your crafting options over time, rather than converting items into raw materials.
The Repair Bench
Restores condition/durability to a damaged item, at a resource cost lower than crafting a fresh replacement (in most cases). Useful for maintaining tools, weapons, and structures that have taken damage over time rather than losing them and rebuilding from scratch.
Choosing the Right One
If an item is junk you don't need — recycle it. If it's something you want to be able to craft going forward — research it. If it's something you already use and it's just worn down — repair it. Mixing these up (like recycling something you actually needed to research) wastes real resources.
Can I craft a Recycler and place it at my own base?
No — recyclers are fixed monument fixtures, not player-placeable structures, unlike the Research Table and Repair Bench which you can build yourself.
Does researching an item destroy it?
Yes — the source item and the scrap used are both consumed once research completes, leaving you with the blueprint instead of the original item.
Is repairing always cheaper than crafting new?
Usually, but not guaranteed in every case — it's worth a quick mental check on the resource cost of each option before assuming repair is automatically the better choice.
Should I keep a Research Table and Repair Bench at my own base?
Generally yes — both are craftable and placeable, and having them at home saves you a monument trip every time you need to research or repair something.
