Rust Workbench Upgrades: What All 10 Do and Where They Drop

Ten loot-only upgrades can turn a plain workbench into a crafting engine. Here's what each one does, where it drops and which to slot first.

Rust Workbench Upgrades: What All 10 Do and Where They Drop

Workbench upgrades are ten loot-only items that slot into a workbench's own inventory and change how that bench behaves: faster batch crafting, cheaper tech tree unlocks, a bigger crafting radius, a tougher bench and more. They arrived with Rust's May 2026 update (our update explainer covers the launch), and they now bring a steady stream of searches to the wiki, led by the Accelerated and Surplus upgrades.

Below: what each of the ten does, where our loot tables say it drops, and which are worth hunting first.

How Workbench Upgrades Work

None of the ten can be crafted. Our item data has no recipe for any of them, so every upgrade you own came out of a crate. They stack to one and, like most loose items, despawn 40 minutes after hitting the ground, so don't leave one on the floor of a half-built base.

To use one, open the workbench and put it in the bench's own storage. Each workbench has twelve storage slots, and ten of them accept upgrade items. That holds for Workbench Level 1, 2 and 3 alike, so you don't need a Level 3 bench before upgrades become useful. An upgrade works for the bench it sits in, so a second bench elsewhere in the base needs its own.

The same odds apply to the Locked Crates on the Oil Rigs and Ghostships, and the Underwater Lab has its own Elite and Normal Crates with matching chances. Every source above is listed on the wiki's loot tables.

Accelerated and Surplus: The Two Everyone Searches For

The Accelerated Workbench Upgrade is the one players chase. Per its in-game description, crafting speed goes up by 25% for each item already completed in the same batch. A single craft gains nothing, and a long queue of ammo, medical items or building parts gains the most, so it suits groups that craft in bulk. Its only sources are Locked Crates (6.25%) and Elite Crates (3.75%), which means high-risk monuments, the Oil Rigs or a hackable crate. Expect it mid-wipe rather than on day one.

The Surplus Workbench Upgrade gives each craft a 20% chance to produce a random surplus part, numbered 1 to 8, which feed special alternate recipes. It is the odd one out in our data: no container currently lists it as a drop. Check its wiki page before you plan around it.

Salvage and Prototype: Bending the Tech Tree

Salvage is the simplest saving in the set. Every tech tree unlock at that bench costs 20% less scrap, so 100 scrap of unlocks costs 80. It drops from the same Locked and Elite Crates as Accelerated, and it does the most good early in a wipe when scrap is tightest. Pair it with the wiki's blueprint tracker to see what your planned unlocks would cost at full price.

Prototype lets you unlock any tech tree item regardless of progression, so you can skip the nodes in between. The catch is in the description: the cost doubles and there is a 25% chance of failure that still consumes the resources. Work that through and an average successful unlock costs about 2.7 times the normal price (double cost, and a quarter of attempts wasted). That's a bad deal for routine unlocks, but it can make sense for one game-changing item you need before your group could reach it the normal way.

The Defensive and Quality-of-Life Upgrades

  • Reinforced raises the bench's max HP by 150% and adds explosive damage resistance, so the bench itself becomes much harder to blow up. It protects your crafting setup, not your loot.
  • Defensive rolls an extra insert slot on any armor or clothing that takes inserts. Metal Armor Inserts turn up in Military Crates (5%) and are guaranteed in Locked Crates, so the two go together.
  • Range doubles the crafting radius, which helps in sprawling bases where the bench sits a few rooms away from your storage.
  • Comfort creates a 100% comfort zone around the bench for long crafting sessions.
  • Recycle Bin sometimes refunds up to 10% of a recipe's ingredients as raw materials. Over a big crafting session that adds up.

Range, Comfort, Defensive and Recycle Bin all come from Normal Crates at 0.625% each. That's low per crate, so treat them as a bonus you pick up along the way rather than something to farm.

Recycle or Keep?

Recycling a spare upgrade returns very little. In the wiki's recycler data most give a few Gears or some Metal Fragments: the Accelerated returns 3 Gears, Defensive and Recycle Bin 75 Metal Fragments each, Range 37 Metal Fragments, and Reinforced 2 Sheet Metal. The best of the bunch is Salvage at 30 Scrap and 3 Gears. A duplicate is nearly always worth more in a teammate's bench or a second crafting base than in a recycler. The recycle calculator lists every yield if you want to check.

Which Upgrades to Slot First

There is no single best set, but the descriptions point to some sensible orders:

  • Early wipe, tight on scrap: Salvage first, then Efficiency for batch crafting.
  • Group that crafts in bulk: Accelerated plus Efficiency on the main bench. Remember that Efficiency doesn't work on explosives or raid items.
  • Base that keeps getting raided: Reinforced on the bench you can least afford to lose.
  • Armor-heavy playstyle: Defensive, especially once Locked Crates are giving you inserts.

For how bench tiers gate what you can craft in the first place, see our guide to research tables and workbench tiers.

Can you craft workbench upgrades in Rust?

No. None of the ten upgrades has a crafting recipe in our item data. They all come from loot crates: Normal, Military, Elite and Locked Crates, plus their Underwater Lab, Oil Rig and Ghostship versions.

Do workbench upgrades work on a Level 1 workbench?

Yes. Workbench Level 1, 2 and 3 all have ten storage slots that accept upgrade items, and the effect applies to whichever bench the upgrade sits in.

Where do you find the Accelerated Workbench Upgrade?

Locked Crates drop it 6.25% of the time (including the Oil Rig and Ghostship versions), and Elite Crates 3.75%, including the Elite Crates in Underwater Labs.

What does the Surplus Workbench Upgrade do?

It gives each craft a 20% chance to produce a random surplus part (1 to 8), which are used in special alternate recipes. Our loot tables don't currently list a container that drops it.

Does the Efficiency upgrade work on C4 or rockets?

No. Its description says the free bonus item doesn't apply when crafting explosive and raid-related items, so it won't help you stretch Timed Explosive Charges or Rockets.
