What's New in Rust's "Devblog 124" Update
Devblog 124 brought the LR 300 Rifle to Rust as a rare, uncraftable drop with predictable recoil, made sleeping bags pickupable, patched a nasty free-ESP exploit, and shipped a pile of pooling and stuttering optimizations.
Devblog 124 landed on August 25th, 2016, and its headline act was a brand new gun: the LR 300 Rifle, Rust's first serious experiment with predictable recoil. Around it, the patch delivered some genuinely welcome quality-of-life wins - pickupable sleeping bags chief among them - plus a frank confession about a week-old ESP exploit, a deep round of performance work, and steady progress on the Lighthouse, Military Tunnels, and a batch of upcoming deployables.
The LR 300 Rifle
The LR 300 Rifle arrived as an uncraftable, unresearchable rare drop that handles differently than any other weapon in the game. Helk greatly reduced its horizontal recoil so its firing pattern is much easier to predict, while compensating with increased cone-fire and damage reduced to 80% of the AK's. It carries a 30 round magazine, and in internal testing it actually put out more damage per second in medium-range fights than the numbers suggest, simply because you can control it.
The gun was openly described as a bit of a test. The team wanted to move away from the "ridiculous recoil" on Rust's existing guns - where firing feels like watching the gun do its thing rather than controlling it - and if the LR 300 worked out, the plan was to rebalance all weapons toward more predictable recoil in the future. You could find it rarely in weapon crates, airdrops, and heli crates.
The animations got attention too: exaggerated movements were stripped out to give the gun a proper sense of weight, and a new tactical-looking reload was added where the player rotates the gun 90 degrees and flicks the mag out with a quick wrist snap. Dedicated LR 300 sounds were in progress and expected the following week.
Sleeping Bag Pickup and Small Comforts
The sleeper hit of the patch: sleeping bags became pickupable, as long as you own them, and could then be redeployed like a fresh bag. That meant your early-game bush bag was no longer a write-off the moment you got a foundation down.
Flashlights also got a tweak - the brightness cast on the player holding one was increased (while the beam brightness was decreased), so the light no longer seemed to come out of nowhere.
The ESP Exploit, Explained
After the previous week's rocky patch forced yet another round of server restarts for a "critical exploit," Helk finally spilled the beans: the player culling debug view could be enabled by any client with playercull.debug true, handing out free ESP. It had been sitting in the game for a week before anyone noticed or reported it via the F7 bug report tool. That hole was closed, along with a related fix for helicopter gibs: if a heli was destroyed outside your network range, the wreckage would never spawn for you when you ran over, leaving invisible pieces you'd get stuck on while seeing players through them. Sorted.
Performance: Attacking the Stutter
Andre doubled down on entity instantiation, destruction, and micro-stuttering work. He identified 13 distinct areas contributing to the big performance drops when moving through the world - some dating back to the first weeks of development - and managed to eliminate or optimize 10 of them in a single week. The gains came mostly from pooling, load balancing, and runtime workload reduction, making lag spikes far less extreme.

Three optimizations remained on the list, so occasional drops were still expected - and if anything new broke, players were asked to try disabling the pool.sounds, pool.entities, or pool.players convars and report back.
Rendering Upgrades
Diogo shipped a proper deferred mesh decal system, replacing a hacky method that only supported sun and moon shadows. Decals now rendered like any other opaque deferred surface, fully integrated with Unity's pipeline - correctly receiving light, shadows, occlusion, and post-processing, even from flashlight and torch light in dark tunnels. They were faster too, meaning more of them could be used to detail environments.
He also fixed pre-integrated skin shading so subsurface scattering looked right in close-ups (with internal changes opening the door to wax- and rubber-like translucent materials later), and restored terrain shadows, which had quietly gone missing - a real difference on uneven landscapes, at no performance cost.
Lighthouse and Military Tunnels
The Lighthouse monument's exterior was finished off - all surfaces mapped, a broken railing added alongside the base, wear, damage, and blending decals in place - with interior work under way on a large bespoke spiral staircase, plus consideration of alternate staircases and ladders to make encounters more interesting.
The Military Tunnels rework spent the week in LOD and collider territory. The models' complexity meant a lot of time closing holes and minimizing sparkles where pieces meet. The dungeon renders a substantial number of lights inside, with the performance cost tied to your Shadow lights graphics option.
Art, Sound, and What's Cooking
The reworked Bone Armour was textured and skinned but missed the merge window - Helk wanted to give it a proper balance pass, so it was promised for the next patch (it did claim the header image, though). The Vending Machine finished its high-poly and low-poly modelling with texturing next, and design exploration began on Flame Turrets - intended to read as obviously different from the gun turret at a distance, potentially spinning and triggered by some kind of mechanism.
On the audio side, the research table got sounds for in-progress research and a success chime, and collectables finally stopped sharing the hemp-picking sound: mushrooms, rocks, and stumps each got their own pickup audio. Inventory UI sounds were rebalanced too - stone and wood thicker, metal-wood tools deeper and more natural. Weapon add-ons and the M249 had their dull materials fine-tuned to reflect light like proper metal, and the player preview got its missing transitions to and from the idle state.
Beyond the highlights, the changelist rounded things out with fixes for see-through walls caused by Motion Blur or TSSAA, stretched river flows on Hapis, god rays with reversed depth enabled, and various "can not play disabled audio source" warnings. With the Bone Armour due the following week and the LR 300 positioned as a recoil test case for the whole arsenal, Devblog 124 was quietly one of the more consequential patches of the summer.
