What's New in Rust's "Harder Core" Update
August 2025 brought Hardcore mode back meaner than before - fog of war, no craftable firearms, doubled upkeep - alongside a ground-up main menu rebuild, up to 65% faster load times, and a full atmospheric revamp with volumetric clouds and biome-localised fog.
Harder Core shipped in August 2025 and it was one of the denser patches of that year. The name comes from the Hardcore game mode returning in a much less forgiving form, but the changes with the longest shelf life were the technical ones: a main menu rebuilt from scratch, a loading refactor that cut times by up to 65%, and a complete overhaul of Rust's clouds and fog.
The Hardcore refresh
Facepunch framed Hardcore the way they framed Primitive - a limited-run experiment rather than a permanent pillar. The stated goal is to offer a fresh way to play, watch how people respond, and feed those lessons back into core Rust. They were upfront that these modes usually stay popular for a couple of months and that most of the team was working on bigger things behind the scenes.
The changes this time went a lot further than the original 2022 version.
Fog of war
The fog of war system returned, exclusive to Hardcore. Your map starts obscured when you spawn and reveals itself gradually as you walk the world. Unlike the original implementation, which was a held item, this version is integrated directly into the normal map system. The point is to sharpen the risk/reward loop - dying costs you more when your knowledge of the world is part of what you built.
The compass
The compass arrived as a proper handheld tool item, available in every game mode. In Hardcore, though, it carries real weight: your location isn't shown on the map at all unless you have a compass in your belt, and even then you get position without a direction indicator. The compass UI strip at the top of the screen is gone entirely in Hardcore, as it was in the original version of the mode.
Weapons, ammo and respawns
This is where Hardcore got genuinely brutal. Firearms can no longer be crafted or researched at all - you use what you find in the world. As a concession, you can repair any weapon you find without needing to research it first. Ammunition crafting costs went up 5x across the board.
Respawn timers were stretched to match: sleeping bags moved to a 15 minute cooldown and beds to 10 minutes. Together with the weapon scarcity, the intent is that engaging another player becomes a decision rather than a reflex.
Upkeep
Upkeep costs were doubled in Hardcore. Facepunch's reasoning was that sprawling compounds dominate maps over time, and that a higher maintenance bill pushes players toward tighter, more efficient designs. The knock-on effects they were hoping for were more frequent raiding and faster base turnover across the map.
The new menu
Rust's menu had been built on top of itself for years. This update replaced it wholesale with a new interface designed from the ground up, and it touched nearly every screen.
The frame is consistent throughout: a horizontal navigation menu across the top, a social bar along the bottom for your friends list, party system and messaging, and everything else in between.
- Home - reworked to put the most recent patch front and centre. A new Twitch Drops tile in the top left activates whenever an event is coming soon or live, a curated hero list sits bottom left for weekly skins and featured DLC, and a Quick Join area in the top right lets you reconnect to a recently played server without leaving the homepage.
- Play - server types moved to a horizontal tab menu running from Official through to what your friends are playing. The filter menu down the left was tidied up substantially so you can see at a glance what you have toggled. New additions include sorting by server mode and seeing queue sizes before you commit to joining.
- Server maps - you can preview a server's map before joining, so you can plan a base location or check for the biome you want. This works on any server with Rust+ support.
- Store - the Featured, Limited and General stores were all rebuilt. The store system was fully rewritten to make browsing skins and packs less painful, with a curated Featured tab and a dedicated weekly skins block.
- Skin viewer - a new overlay lets you rotate, pan and zoom skins to inspect them from any angle. It also appears on the Inventory page for skins you already own.
- Inventory - reorganised, with a new modal per item showing information, a 3D model viewer where available, market rates and whether the item can be broken down. Crafting got the same modal treatment for consistency.
- Settings - options are now grouped into categories, with a search bar that filters controls and highlights which pages contain matches.
- Gesture wheel - fully overhauled with drag and drop, so you can move gestures between slots freely. Other gesture packs now show up in the menu too, marked owned or unowned, with a shortcut through to the store.
Loading optimisations
The standout technical win. Loading from desktop into a server got up to 65% quicker, and memory usage dropped by 10-20% along the way. The experimental "Optimized Loading" toggle was removed entirely - the new approach replaces it and can't be turned off. The improvements apply to the dedicated server as well as the client.
The explanation is worth reading if you've ever stared at Asset Warmup. That step loads every prefab from disk and preprocesses it, and prefab loading was eating most of the time. The old experimental option just made Unity load prefabs asynchronously. The new approach packs all the prefabs into a couple of scenes and loads those instead, because Unity turns out to be dramatically faster at loading scenes than prefabs. Those scenes load asynchronously the moment you hit the menu, then get hooked into Rust's existing ResourceRef system and used as normal prefabs.
The memory savings come from no longer needing two copies of every prefab - the asset plus the preprocessed copy - and moving a chunk of preprocessing to build time. Neither was practical before, since modifying prefab assets during builds is unreliable and doing it at runtime is unusually slow.
Volumetric clouds, fog and atmospherics
Rust's sky and air got a facelift built around supporting more dynamic weather than the old tech could handle.
Volumetric clouds live under the Experimental options tab as a replacement for the old 2D clouds. They're fully 3D, drift across the sky, morph with the weather, and react to sky lighting throughout the day. You can also set them from console with graphics.vclouds 1 through 4, with 4 being the best looking and the heaviest on your GPU.
Volumetric fog is the more consequential half. Fog setups are now localised per biome and spatially consistent, instead of being adjusted globally based on which biome you happened to be standing in - a system that both looked wrong and gave an advantage to anyone watching a biome from outside it. Now you can see the haze of the arctic as an outsider looking in. Because the fog is volumetric it also takes light from the sun and shadows from the environment, producing natural god rays, and each biome's fog is tinted slightly differently to match its surroundings.
Metal detector changes
Metal detectors can now turn up weapons dropped by other players. When a player's backpack or dropped weapon despawns, it gets buried for a day so someone else can find it. The odds of a hit are deliberately low but scale with how many weapons have been dropped in an area, so sweeping a post-raid site is meant to feel worthwhile.
Buried weapons sit on a rough grid rather than at exact coordinates, so you can't drop a gun to stash it and dig it back up in the same spot. Anything not found expires after 24 hours, and the pool is filtered so you won't pull something absurd out of the ground - though most weapons are eligible.
Performance and visual polish
- Batched projectile updates - projectiles used to each run their own physics raycasts one after another, which gets slow when a lot of them are flying through a dense area. They've been rewritten to update as a single batched set, gathering all the physics queries up front and running them in parallel across available job threads. Benchmarks put batched projectiles at least twice as fast to compute as the old serial ones. It won't double your framerate, but heavy fights should be smoother.
- Foliage self-shadowing - trees and bushes outside shadow range now apply directional self-shadowing, improving distant foliage and stopping trees looking like they're glowing at sunrise and sunset.
- Painting auto-save - a toggleable option syncs your painting with the server every 30 seconds so a badly timed starvation death doesn't cost you the whole piece.
- Syringe animation rework - the self-injection heal now applies as the syringe leaves the arm rather than slightly after, with the same total animation duration. Purely visual, but it should mean fewer accidentally cancelled heals.
- Skins normal map fix - a client bug had been writing normal maps in an incorrect configuration for certain Workshop submissions. The submission path was fixed earlier; this patch repaired the historically affected skins so they finally look how their creators intended.
Notable changes
- Miniguns in autoturrets and attack helicopters now spin up before firing
- Admins using
debug.invisandglobal.godget visual indicators when those modes are active - Two new keybinds: place a map marker at your current position, and clear all map markers
- Weapon stats update live as you add and remove attachments
- Server restart warnings moved from chat messages to toasts
- Tugboats can honk, the same way cars can
- Heavy armour movement penalties were swapped between pieces: chest and legs went from 10%/20% to 20%/10%, and the penalties now show in the item inspection menu
- Research tables can be picked up with scrap still inside, and the crafting menu remembers your search between openings
The full changelist runs to several thousand characters of smaller fixes on top of that - oil refineries not producing heat, nametags showing through thin floors, a memory leak when Rust+ users connected to remote cameras, players getting flyhack-kicked for jumping on the outer parts of roof blocks, and an ancient bug that made doors impossible to pick up until a lock had been placed and removed.
Server security changes
Two administrative changes for server owners. Running an insecure server now means passing -insecure on startup rather than setting server.secure to false; the convar still worked but printed warnings, with removal targeted for 4th September 2025. Secure servers also needed secure.encryption at 1 or higher to appear in the client's server browser, with the requirement due to rise to 2 on the same date. Since that has long been the default for Rust Dedicated Servers, most owners had nothing to do.
Pilot Pack DLC and Twitch Drops
The month's DLC was a Hazmat pack themed around an elite fighter pilot, available in-game or from the Rust Steam item store. It contains the Pilot Suit G-Suit, the M15 Semi-Automatic Pistol, a Flight Control Codelock, the Black Box wood storage box, and a Salvaged Ejector Seat chair that, as the store copy notes, no longer ejects.
Twitch Drops returned for Home Brewed 3 from August 7th to 17th, again spotlighting up-and-coming Rust creators, and Rust itself was 50% off on Steam over that weekend.
