What's New in Rust's "11th Feb Update" Update
A small but telling patch from February 2014, back in Rust's Legacy days: harvesting resources stopped killing players, shelter decay was switched on for real, wolves got scarier to other AI, and a few classic building exploits were closed.
The 11th Feb Update arrived in February 2014, deep in Rust's Legacy era, when patches were small, frequent and refreshingly blunt about their own bugs. This one was a grab-bag of fixes - headlined by the wonderfully honest note that resources "should maybe hopefully not kill you anymore while harvesting them". Early Rust in a nutshell.
Survival and AI Fixes
The harvesting-death bug was the big one: chopping a node could apparently kill you, and this patch (probably) put a stop to it. Wildlife got smarter too - wolves now actually scare other AI when they're chasing or attacking something, and AI in general figures out much sooner when it can't reach you and knows to retreat rather than pathing hopelessly at a wall. A minor issue with spawning wildlife and resource nodes that could spam the server console was also fixed, and the last chunk of a rock node now sits on the ground instead of hovering in mid-air.
Building Exploits Closed
A few of Legacy's more antisocial tricks were patched out in one go:
- You can no longer place shelters on top of people to lock them in
- You can't build structures on top of large spiked walls anymore
- Barricades can no longer be stacked on top of barricades
On the shelter front, decay was confirmed to be "active for sure" - abandoned shelters will now genuinely disappear rather than littering the map forever.
One for the Defenders
Finally, metal window bars were made thinner, making it easier to shoot out of your own base - a small change, but a welcome one for anyone who'd ever lost a firefight to their own window frame. A modest patch all told, but this steady drip of fixes was exactly how Legacy Rust evolved week to week in early 2014.
