Rust Decay Mechanics: How Fast Things Actually Fall Apart

An empty Tool Cupboard doesn't destroy your base instantly. Here's what decay actually does, and how fast.

Decay is Rust's way of eventually clearing out abandoned or unmaintained structures — but it doesn't work instantly, and understanding the actual mechanic helps you judge real risk versus assumed risk.

What Triggers Decay

Once a Tool Cupboard's stored upkeep resources run out, the building pieces within its range become vulnerable to decay — losing condition/HP gradually over real-world time rather than being destroyed all at once.

Decay Speed Varies by Tier

Lower tiers (twig especially, then wood) decay faster than higher tiers like stone, metal, and armored — part of why twig is only ever meant as a placeholder and why an abandoned wood base clears out of the map noticeably faster than an abandoned stone one.

Decay and Raiding Overlap

A base that's already lost some HP to decay is cheaper to finish raiding than a fully-maintained one at the same tier — this is part of why letting upkeep lapse, even briefly, isn't purely a cosmetic risk; it can make an otherwise-solid base meaningfully easier to break into.

Fully Abandoned Bases

Given enough time with no upkeep at all, decay will eventually clear a base from the map entirely — this is part of how servers stay clean of long-dead builds without requiring manual admin wipes of every abandoned structure.

Practical Takeaway

Treat decay as a real, gradual risk rather than an instant on/off switch — a short lapse in upkeep won't destroy your base overnight, but it does start a countdown, and it makes your base progressively easier to raid the longer it goes unaddressed.

Does my base get destroyed the moment upkeep runs out?

No — decay is gradual, not instant. There's a window before serious HP loss sets in, but it's not indefinite, so don't treat an empty Tool Cupboard as a non-issue.

Why does twig decay so much faster than stone?

It's intentionally the weakest, most temporary tier in the game — fast decay is part of why it's only meant as a brief placeholder before upgrading, not a long-term building material.

Can a partially-decayed base still be raided normally?

Yes — and it's cheaper to raid than a fully-maintained one at the same tier, since it's already lost some of its HP to decay before a raider even starts.

Does decay eventually clear a base entirely off the map?

Yes, given enough unmaintained time — this is how truly abandoned structures eventually disappear without needing manual server intervention.
