Base Location Red Flags: Spots That Look Good but Aren't

Some base spots look great on arrival and turn into a problem a week later. Here's what to watch for before you commit.

Building on our "where and how to build your first base" post, some locations look genuinely appealing at first glance but turn into real problems once you've already invested resources — here are the common red flags worth checking before you commit.

Visible From a Road or Well-Traveled Path

A location convenient enough to be near a road for easy looting is also convenient for anyone driving past to spot your base. If your walls are visible from a road at a glance, you're inviting far more attention than a slightly less convenient but hidden spot would.

Too Close to a High-Traffic Monument

Being near a monument for easy access also means dealing with everyone else visiting that monument regularly — a base right next to a popular loot spot faces far more incidental player traffic than one a short walk away.

Low-Lying or Flood-Prone Terrain

Certain terrain can complicate building or create unexpected issues with water/terrain interaction — checking the actual terrain shape before committing resources avoids an unpleasant surprise partway through construction.

Poor Natural Sightlines

A spot surrounded by terrain that blocks YOUR view of approaches just as much as it blocks others' view of you isn't necessarily a win — you want cover that hides you while still letting you see threats coming, not a blind spot that works against you too.

Isolated From Resources

A perfectly hidden spot with no nearby wood, stone, or other resources just means a longer farming commute for every single supply run — cover is worth less if it costs you significant time every day getting to and from resources.

Checking Before You Commit

Spend a few extra minutes scouting a location from multiple angles — walk the perimeter, check sightlines both ways, and confirm nearby resources — before spending real materials on a base you might regret within days.

Is being near a road ever worth the extra visibility risk?

It can be, for the looting convenience, but the safer approach is being close enough for easy access without being directly visible from the road itself — a short walk of separation makes a real difference.

How do I check sightlines before building?

Walk around your intended spot from multiple directions and note what you can see (and, just as importantly, what you can't) — a location that blocks your own view of approaches works against you as much as it works for you.

Is a beautifully hidden spot worth it if resources are far away?

Only if you're prepared for the ongoing time cost of longer farming trips — a hidden spot with no nearby resources trades one problem (visibility) for another (convenience), so weigh both before committing.

What's the most commonly overlooked red flag?

Proximity to a high-traffic monument — the convenience is tempting, but the added incidental player traffic near a popular loot spot is easy to underestimate until you're dealing with it daily.
