What's New in Rust's "Built Different" Update
Rust's player model got rebuilt from the ground up, and a new burst-fire rifle joined the arsenal. Here's what actually changed.
June 2026's "Built Different" update is a big one under the hood — Rust's player character got rebuilt essentially from scratch, the game moved to a newer engine version, and a new mid-range rifle joined the weapon roster. Here's the plain-English version of what changed.
A Genuinely Rebuilt Player Model
This isn't a minor tweak — Facepunch reworked the player model with improved meshes, materials, and more realistic body proportions, alongside a new animation system built with layered subsystems for smoother, more natural movement. Character customization also expanded, with more head shapes, hairstyles, and beard options.
Moving to Unity 6
Rust upgraded its underlying game engine to Unity 6 — mostly invisible to players directly, but it's the foundation a lot of this update's other technical improvements build on, including a new opt-in navmesh system that changes how NPCs (and now animals) path around the world, including into player bases in some cases.
New Armor and the M16A2
Three new loot-only armor pieces arrived — a ballistic helmet, vest, and leg armor — alongside a full Battle Dress Uniform attire set, also loot-only rather than craftable. On the weapons side, the M16A2 joined the roster as a three-round-burst rifle aimed at medium-range engagements, sitting in an interesting space between the fully-automatic AK and single-shot precision rifles covered in our weapons overview post.
Gameplay Refinements
- Better hit registration for players standing on moving objects like boats and hot air balloons.
- Workbench range upgrades now also extend comfort range, not just crafting range.
- Re-skinning an electrical component now automatically re-adjusts any wires already connected to it.
- Improved scientist AI pathfinding, including better flanking behavior.
A Monetization Rename Worth Knowing About
Facepunch also renamed "Premium" to "Premium Access Pass" (no functional change), specifically to free up the plain "Rust Premium" name for a separate monthly cosmetic subscription system planned for later in 2026 — worth knowing so the naming doesn't confuse you when that system actually launches.
Why This Update Matters
Most of "Built Different" is investment in the game's foundation — a new engine version, a rebuilt character model, and a new pathfinding system — rather than flashy new content. The real payoff (smoother animations, better NPC behavior, headroom for future features) shows up gradually rather than all at once.
Do I need to change any settings to get the rebuilt player model?
No — the model and animation overhaul apply by default; the new navmesh system specifically is opt-in via a server launch argument, so that part depends on the server you're playing on.
Is the M16A2 better than the AK?
It's different rather than strictly better — a three-round-burst weapon suited to medium range, occupying a different niche than the AK's full-auto close-to-mid-range role.
Is the new armor craftable?
No — the ballistic helmet, vest, leg armor, and the Battle Dress Uniform set are all loot-only, meaning you'll need to find them rather than craft them from a blueprint.
