Sulfur Farming: How Much You Actually Need for Explosives
Explosives are only as available as your sulfur income. Here's how to think about scaling a sulfur farm to your raiding goals.
If raiding is part of your plan for a wipe, sulfur is almost always the bottleneck resource — explosives are sulfur-hungry, and casual mining rarely keeps up with what a serious raid actually costs.
Why Sulfur Is the Bottleneck
Wood and stone are relatively easy to accumulate in bulk; sulfur ore requires more deliberate mining and smelting effort, and every explosive recipe (C4, rockets, satchels) consumes meaningful amounts of it. A base that's stone-and-metal rich but sulfur-poor still can't raid anything serious.
Setting Up a Real Sulfur Operation
Casual, occasional mining won't produce raid-scale sulfur. A dedicated approach usually means: identifying a good sulfur node cluster, running a proper furnace setup (ideally a Large Furnace, see our furnace guide) to smelt in bulk, and treating sulfur farming as its own scheduled activity rather than an afterthought while gathering wood and stone.
Planning Around a Specific Raid
Before committing to a raid, it helps to have a rough sense of how many charges a given wall tier needs (see our raiding methods and soft-side/hard-side posts) and back-calculate how much sulfur that requires, rather than raiding with "whatever we've got" and running out mid-attempt.
Sulfur Efficiency Tips
- Smelt in a Large Furnace where possible — better throughput than several small furnaces you have to manage separately.
- Use the furnace-split technique (see our furnace guide) even for sulfur, since it applies the same way as any other ore.
- Consider a dedicated sulfur-focused base or outpost if your main base is far from good sulfur nodes.
Why does sulfur run out faster than wood or stone during a raid?
Because explosive recipes specifically consume large amounts of it relative to how much a casual player typically mines — raiding at any real scale requires treating sulfur production as a dedicated project, not an afterthought.
Is a Large Furnace worth the extra investment for sulfur specifically?
Yes, if you're planning serious raiding — its higher throughput matters most for exactly this kind of bulk ore processing.
Should I calculate explosive needs before or during a raid?
Always before — running out of explosives partway through an attempt, with a wall still standing, is one of the most common and costly raiding mistakes.
Is it worth trading for sulfur instead of farming it myself?
It can be, if you have something valuable to trade and limited time — but relying entirely on trading for your raid supply is riskier than having your own steady production, especially with a big raid planned.
