Rust Raid Chart: How Many Explosives for Each Wall

Stone takes 2 C4, sheet metal 4 and armored 8. The full wall raid chart, with sulfur costs and the cheapest mixes.

Rust Raid Chart: How Many Explosives for Each Wall

A Stone Wall takes 2 Timed Explosive Charges (C4), 4 Rockets or 10 Satchel Charges. A sheet metal wall takes 4 C4, 8 Rockets or 23 Satchels. An Armored Wall takes 8 C4, 15 Rockets or 46 Satchels. Those are the numbers most raids are planned around, and this chart covers every wall grade with the sulfur each option costs.

All counts come from the wiki's raid calculator, which works them out from each building piece's durability data and prices every explosive from its full crafting recipe. One naming note: the wiki calls the sheet metal grade "Metal", so a Metal Wall below is the sheet metal wall you build in game.

The Wall Raid Chart

Each cell shows how many of that explosive one wall needs, with the total sulfur in brackets.

Every standard piece of a grade takes the same count: wall, doorway, window, wall frame, half and low walls, floors, foundations and roofs. A Stone Wall Doorway is exactly as tough as a Stone Wall. Stairs and ramps take slightly fewer explosive rounds (173 instead of 185 at Stone), and foundation steps break more easily still, so check those individually on the wiki's building pages.

What Each Explosive Costs

ExplosiveSulfurOther raw materials
Rocket1,4001,950 Charcoal, 100 Metal Fragments, 30 Low Grade Fuel, 2 Metal Pipe
Timed Explosive Charge2,2003,000 Charcoal, 200 Metal Fragments, 60 Low Grade Fuel, 5 Cloth, 2 Tech Trash
Satchel Charge480720 Charcoal, 80 Metal Fragments, 1 Rope, 10 Cloth
Explosive 5.56 Rifle Ammo25 per round30 Charcoal, 5 Metal Fragments per round (crafted two at a time)
Beancan Grenade120180 Charcoal, 20 Metal Fragments

Charcoal is the cost people forget. Eight C4 for an Armored Wall means 24,000 Charcoal on top of the 17,600 sulfur, so a raid group needs a lot of wood going through its furnaces as well as sulfur. The wiki's craft calculator breaks any batch down the same way.

The Cheapest Way Through Each Grade

Damage from different explosives adds up, so the calculator also finds the cheapest mix of staples for each piece:

  • Wood Wall: 47 Explosive 5.56 Rifle Ammo, 1,175 sulfur.
  • Stone Wall: 1 C4 and 84 explosive rounds, 4,300 sulfur (100 less than 2 C4).
  • Metal Wall: 3 C4 and 70 explosive rounds, 8,350 sulfur (450 less than 4 C4).
  • Armored Wall: 7 C4 and 30 explosive rounds, 16,150 sulfur (1,450 less than 8 C4).

The tougher the wall, the more topping it off with explosive ammo saves. On stone the saving barely covers the time spent shooting, but on armored it is close to two thirds of a C4. Without a rifle you can still save: 7 C4 plus 2 Satchels clears an Armored Wall for 16,360 sulfur, against 17,600 for eight C4.

Why Satchels and Beancans Fall Off

Every explosive loses punch as the grade goes up, but not equally. A C4 deals 495 damage to a Wood Wall and 275 to stone, metal or armored. A Satchel Charge drops from 91.5 against wood to 51.5 against stone and 43.5 against metal. Measured as sulfur per point of damage, C4 is the most efficient staple against wood and every grade above it. The cheapest mixes still use explosive ammo because C4 comes in big chunks, and a wall that needs a fraction of a charge wastes the rest.

That's why Satchels earn their place on wood and doors rather than walls. On a Metal Wall, 23 Satchels cost more sulfur than 4 C4 and take far longer to place. High Velocity Rockets are worse still: our table needs 32 of them for one Stone Wall, 6,400 sulfur.

Cheap Tricks Against Wood

Wood is the one grade where the specialist options make sense. In our raid table a single Incendiary Rocket (300 sulfur) is enough for a Wood Wall, and four Molotov Cocktails do it with no sulfur at all, just Low Grade Fuel and Cloth. Neither helps against stone, but they turn an early-wipe wooden base into a cheap target.

Planning a Raid With the Calculator

  1. Add every piece between you and the loot as a target. Filter by grade, or use the Deployable group for doors, hatches and windows.
  2. Untick any explosive you don't have, so the plan only uses what is actually in your boxes.
  3. Switch between "Cheapest mix" and "One explosive per piece" depending on whether you care more about sulfur or speed.
  4. Copy the link and send it to your group before anyone starts crafting.

Add the total to your farming plan. Our guide to sulfur farming covers how to stockpile it, and Raiding 101 covers scouting and timing.

How many C4 does it take to break a stone wall in Rust?

Two Timed Explosive Charges (4,400 sulfur). The cheapest mix is one C4 plus 84 Explosive 5.56 Rifle Ammo, which comes to 4,300 sulfur.

How many rockets for a sheet metal wall?

Eight Rockets (11,200 sulfur). Four C4 does the same job for 8,800 sulfur.

How many satchels for an armored wall?

46 Satchel Charges, which is 22,080 sulfur. That's more than eight C4 (17,600), so satchels are a poor choice for armored walls.

What's the cheapest way to raid a wood wall?

Among the standard explosives, 47 rounds of Explosive 5.56 Rifle Ammo (1,175 sulfur). In our raid table a single Incendiary Rocket (300 sulfur) or four Molotov Cocktails (no sulfur) also do it.

Is a wall doorway or window weaker than a full wall?

No. Doorways, windows, frames and half walls take the same number of explosives as a full wall of the same grade. The weak point is whatever sits in the opening, such as the door.
