What's New in Rust's "Coupling The Rails" Update

November 2023 finally joined Rust's surface and underground rail networks, switched on functional train signals, let electricians reconnect wires instead of rerunning them, and shipped the western-themed Frontier decor pack plus the Observer Island map.

What's New in Rust's "Coupling The Rails" Update

The Coupling The Rails update arrived in November 2023 and did exactly what it said on the tin: it finally connected Rust's above-ground rail network to the underground tunnels, turning two separate systems into one continuous railway. Around that headline change came functional train signals, a genuinely great electricity quality-of-life fix, a wild-west decor DLC, and a community-built custom map joining the official server rotation.

One Rail Network At Last

On servers with a world size of at least 4250, maps now generate one or two rail tunnels that let trains travel seamlessly between the surface and underground networks — just drive a train into one of the tunnels, down a short slope, and you're in the underground system. Every wagon type is fully compatible with both networks regardless of length, opening up new gameplay opportunities for rail logistics. The team also fixed light-leaking issues in small areas like stairwells and made assorted minor visual tweaks along the network.

The signal lights in the underground tunnels — present but permanently off for ages — are now fully functional train signals:

  • Green — the block ahead is clear.
  • Red — the first block ahead has something in it: a train or a barricade.
  • Yellow — the second block ahead is occupied, so you have time to prepare.

A "block" is the section between two signals; where there's no next signal, it covers the rest of the track to the end of the line, or the next 500m if the line runs further than that.

Wire Tool Reconnect

Not only did the rails get coupled — wires can now be re-coupled too. Anyone who's done electrical work in Rust knows the pain of unequipping the wire tool mid-run and having to re-lay a wire from the top of the base to the bottom (or shouting for a teammate to slap down a root combiner). The wire tool now supports reconnecting existing wires: a quick Right Click reconnects, while holding Right Click clears the wire you're holding or looking at. Redesigning circuits and repairing long runs just got dramatically less miserable.

Items on Vehicles

Dropped items no longer fall through vehicles — you can now drop loot on trains, cars, boats, helicopters and the rest, and it collides properly. Dropped items carry some mass, so a big enough pile will weigh a vehicle down a bit, but you can still fly a scrap heli's worth of stuff across the map.

Frontier Base Decor Pack

The Frontier base decor pack DLC launched this month: a wild-western-themed collection of 10 new items with 17 variants, available on the Rust Steam item store or in-game.

  • Fish Trophy — insert a fish to mount your best catch; interact with it for a peek into the life of a fish in Rust.
  • Hunting Trophies — Small and Large mounts for stuffed heads. Harvest a corpse with the new Skinning Knife to get a Head item; the Large Trophy takes Shark, Bear, Boar, Wolf, Polar Bear, Horse and Stag heads, while the Small Trophy takes Chicken or Humanoid heads. Player and NPC heads even display whatever head clothing they were wearing, and mounting extra matching heads is tracked alongside the creature or player's name.
  • Wooden Frontier Bar Doors — saloon doors for a Wall Frame that swing open gunslinger-style, complete with a kick option on the radial menu.
  • Wanted Poster — assign any player from your contacts or friends list to put their mugshot and name on the poster; ships with 3 additional skins in different styles and sizes.
  • Torch Holder — mount your starting Torch for quick base lighting; it can be ignited or extinguished, reacts to nearby igniters and water sources (buckets, water guns, sprinklers), works with all torch skins, and decays at the same rate as a hand-held torch.
  • Rocking Chair — a movable, input-responsive chair with rustic charm.
  • Frontier Planters — grow crops in a disused minecart, an abandoned bathtub, or a hand-crafted railroad planter, holding 2, 3 and 9 seeds respectively.
  • Single Item Weapon Racks — three space-saving racks for displaying a favourite item within easy reach.
  • Storage Barrels — vertical and horizontal barrels with the same capacity as the large wooden box; they cost slightly more and cannot be locked.

Quality of Life Highlights

  • Water catchers fill even faster, building on last month's changes.
  • The jackhammer can be repaired at the repair bench for free.
  • Planters can be picked up with a hammer.
  • Weapon ammo amounts now display in the container UI.
  • Auto-skin items by holding shift while right-clicking them into the repair bench.
  • Horse saddlebag slots doubled from 6 to 12, with horse storage separated from equipment and stats in the loot panel.

Observer Island

Observer Island is a 4K-sized custom map created by community members CollapsedOrange and wheatleymf, featuring custom mountains, road and train bridges, train tunnels, unique monuments, buildable arch rocks, manually sculpted cliffs, several underwater monuments — and, reportedly, a well-hidden secret monument. The goal was to keep everything vanilla Rust offers while making exploration more engaging; Facepunch was clear this is not "new Hapis", but its own thing. It went live under the official tab in the server browser on dedicated EU and US servers, and from November 9th server owners could purchase the map, plugins and future updates from the lone.design store.

The Rest of the Patch

The changelist carries a long tail of fixes and tweaks: the graphics quality slider became a dropdown, the spooky speaker gained an IO port, laser attachments are now always centred when used with a scope, and turret server-side performance improved. Notable fixes include helicopters properly taking damage again when colliding with the Cargo Ship or Excavator, a safezone exploit that allowed looting sleepers and corpses, shotgun traps shooting authorised players after a TC was destroyed in multi-TC bases, electrical switch inputs requiring rewiring after use, and the crafted amount resetting to 1 on every click. The Halloween event was switched off, and global rendering was disabled. With a full DLC pack landing on the Steam item store this month, it's also a good moment to browse our skin tracker and see how the Frontier era's cosmetics have held up.
