Airdrops and the Cargo Ship: High-Risk, High-Reward Loot

A falling crate or a slow-moving ship can hand you some of the best loot in the game — if you're willing to fight for it.

Airdrops and the Cargo Ship are two of Rust's periodic loot events — both offer excellent gear, and both are magnets for PvP since everyone on the server can see them happen.

Airdrops

A supply plane periodically flies over the map and drops a crate marked by a flare, visible to everyone. The crate contains solid loot — weapons, components, sometimes blueprints — but it's also a well-known ambush spot, since every nearby player knows exactly where it's going to land. Approaching an airdrop alone, especially without decent gear, is a genuine gamble; you may be walking into a fight with whoever gets there first, or whoever's already waiting.

The Cargo Ship

A large ship periodically circles the coastline, carrying substantial loot and, on some versions, its own scientist NPCs guarding the best rooms. Boarding it typically means fighting through defenses to reach the good loot, and — same as airdrops — other players often try to board it too, making it as much a PvP event as a PvE one.

Is It Worth Contesting?

Both events reward good loot for real risk. A few practical guidelines:

  • Don't approach solo unless you're confident in a 1-vs-many fight — assume other players are already there or inbound.
  • Bring a real combat loadout, not just a farming kit — you're very likely walking into PvP, not just PvE.
  • Have an exit plan. Grabbing loot and immediately extracting is often smarter than trying to hold the position and loot everything.
  • Consider going with a team specifically for these events even if you otherwise play solo — the numbers advantage matters a lot here.

Can I see where an airdrop is going to land?

Yes — the plane and falling crate are visible to the whole server, and the crate itself is usually marked with a smoke flare once it lands, which is exactly why airdrops are such reliable ambush spots.

Is the Cargo Ship worth boarding solo?

It's risky — between potential NPC defenses and other players also trying to board, going alone is a real gamble. It's much safer with at least one teammate watching your back.

What's the safest way to get airdrop loot without fighting for it?

Sometimes waiting a short while after the crate lands (letting an initial contest resolve) and then moving in cautiously can work, but there's no truly safe method — the risk is inherent to the event's design.

Should I call in an airdrop myself if I have the supply signal item?

Only if you're prepared to defend it — calling one in tells the whole server exactly where and when it's landing, same as a natural airdrop, so you're creating the same ambush risk for yourself.
