Farming Smart: Why Small Trips Beat Big Hauls in Rust

Farming huge amounts in one trip feels efficient right up until you die and lose all of it. Smaller, safer trips almost always win.

This might be the single most common mistake new Rust players make: farming far more than they actually need in one go. It's tempting — more resources at once feels efficient — but it makes dying that much more painful, since everything you were carrying is lost at once.

Gather What You Need, Not What You Can Carry

It's far better to gather modest amounts of whatever you need right now and bring it back to your base regularly, rather than one huge haul. This way you only ever risk losing a small trip's worth, not hours of accumulated farming.

Farm Near Your Sleeping Bags

Try to farm in areas close to your placed sleeping bags. If you do die mid-farm, you respawn nearby instead of losing all the time it takes to walk back from wherever you fell.

Don't Farm in Open Spaces

You start the game with nothing, so anyone with more gear than you will out-farm you and, if hostile, kill you easily in the open. If you're farming in exposed terrain, use bushes for cover or move in a zig-zag pattern rather than a straight line — it makes you a much harder target to hit or predict. And if you hear footsteps nearby, don't wait to find out who it is — disengage.

Putting It Together

The pattern that keeps new players alive longest: small farming trips, close to a sleeping bag, in cover or moving unpredictably rather than standing in the open, returning to base regularly instead of hoarding a huge pile out in the world. It's a less "efficient"-feeling way to farm, but it's a lot more survivable.

Isn't farming in bigger batches more time-efficient?

In pure resource-per-minute terms, maybe slightly — but the risk of losing an entire large haul to one death usually outweighs the small time savings, especially early on when you have little else to fall back on.

How close should my sleeping bags be to where I farm?

Close enough that dying doesn't cost you a long walk back — a bag placed near a resource cluster you farm regularly means a death there barely slows you down.

What should I do if I hear footsteps while farming?

Stop and reassess rather than continuing to farm obliviously — retreat toward cover or your base if you're unsure who's nearby. It's rarely worth the risk of continuing blindly.

Does zig-zagging actually help while farming in the open?

Yes — a predictable straight-line target is much easier to hit than one moving irregularly, and it costs you almost nothing in gathering speed to build the habit.
