Estimating Your Base's Upkeep Cost Before You Build
The most common base-building mistake isn't a design flaw — it's building bigger than you can actually afford to maintain.
We've covered why oversized bases fail (see our base building 101 post) — but knowing roughly how to estimate upkeep before you build, rather than after, is what actually prevents the mistake.
Why Estimate in Advance
Every building piece within your Tool Cupboard's range costs resources per day to maintain. Committing to a design without a rough sense of the total daily cost is how players end up with a base that's already outpacing their farming rate before they've even finished the walls.
A Practical Approach
Before building, count roughly how many pieces (walls, floors, doors) your intended design will need at your target tier, and compare that against how much you and your team can realistically farm per day without it consuming your entire play session. If the estimate already feels tight on paper, the real thing will likely be worse once other priorities (raiding, PvP, exploring) compete for your farming time.
Solo vs. Group Estimates
A solo player's realistic daily farming capacity is naturally lower than a group's combined output — sizing your base to your ACTUAL group's farming capacity, not an idealized best-case session, avoids the common trap of a base that only works if everyone farms every single day.
Build in a Buffer
Don't plan for exactly break-even upkeep — a buffer (extra days' worth of resources stockpiled in the Tool Cupboard) protects you against a day or two where farming isn't possible (busy schedule, bad RNG, a rough PvP day), which is exactly when decay would otherwise start eating into your base for free.
Revisit as You Upgrade
Upgrading from stone to metal, or adding rooms, meaningfully changes your upkeep — recalculate roughly every time you make a significant change rather than assuming your original estimate still holds.
Is there an exact formula for calculating upkeep?
The game does calculate it precisely per piece and tier, and you can check your Tool Cupboard's own upkeep display for exact current numbers — the "rough estimate before building" approach here is about planning ahead, not a substitute for that exact in-game figure.
Should I size my base for my best day of farming or my average day?
Your average, realistic day — sizing for a best-case farming session sets you up to fall behind on upkeep the moment a normal or bad day happens instead.
How big a buffer should I keep in the Tool Cupboard?
Enough to cover at least a few days without farming, so a single missed session doesn't immediately put your base into decay — the exact amount depends on your play frequency and base size.
Does upgrading walls to a higher tier always increase upkeep proportionally?
Higher tiers generally cost more upkeep than lower ones, though the exact scaling isn't necessarily linear — recalculate after any tier upgrade rather than assuming a simple proportional increase.
