What's New in Rust's "Silent Night, Violent Night" Update

Rust's December 2025 update, Silent Night, Violent Night, went live on December 18th and did what Rustmas does best - it dropped presents all over the island and dared you to go collect them with half the server hunting the same jingle bells. This one was an event-and-goodies patch rather than a mechanics overhaul: the classic Christmas gift event, a fresh festive wallpaper DLC, the return of fan-favourite Rustmas store items, creator drops running across both Twitch and KICK, and a base decorating contest with real money on the line. Here's everything that happened.

The Christmas Gift Event

The core loop returned unchanged and as chaotic as ever: while playing, you'd periodically hear jingle bells - the cue to leave the warmth of your base and hunt for presents. Two gifts spawned per player within about 40 metres, ready to be bashed open for festive loot. Presents came in small, medium and large sizes, and stockpiling smaller ones let you trade up to the bigger tiers - so the question every wipe became whether to open your small presents now or hoard them for the large-gift jackpot. As always, the event ran alongside the regular December wipe, meaning fresh bases got decorated fast and undefended present-hunters got introduced to the "Violent Night" half of the title.

Festive Wallpaper DLC

Three limited-store wallpapers shipped for the holiday season, one for each surface type: Assorted Giftwrap for walls, Red Festive Floor Tiles for floors, and Moulded Plaster for ceilings. Facepunch's own pitch: bring peace and joy to you and the grub camped just outside your door. The giftwrap one sparkles.

The Rustmas Store Returns

Alongside the new wallpapers, a batch of festive classics from previous years came back to the Rust Item Store: the Deluxe Christmas Lights, Snow Machine, Snowman, Festive Garlands Pack, Christmas Door Wreath, Santa Beard, Neon Sign Pack and Snowman Hat. If you missed them the first time around, this was the restock. The community's workshop scene did its part too - that season's accepted festive skins ranged from the Evil Snowman M249 to the Santa's Bearskin Rug and the North Star Metal Chestplate, most of which still trade on the market today.

Rustmas Drops on Twitch AND KICK

For the first time, the festive creator drops ran on both Twitch and KICK simultaneously - four category-wide drops on each platform from December 18th through 7PM GMT on January 1st. The formula stayed simple: watch anyone streaming Rust during the festive period and collect Christmas-themed cosmetics for your character and base. Running dual platforms was part of Facepunch's broader creator-program push that year, and it meaningfully widened who could earn the festive gear.

Rust x Can Be: A Real-World Loot Bag

The unexpected item of the month wasn't in the game at all: a collaboration with heritage brand Can Be turned Rust's standard-issue Military Backpack into a real, premium physical accessory - scavenged DIY aesthetic, genuine craftsmanship, and actually designed to be used rather than shelved as a collectable. Laptop, gym gear, or staying on-brand while you queue for wipe day: the ultimate loot bag argument settled itself.

Base Decorating Contest

The annual Rustmas Base Decorating Competition returned for 2025: build the most Christmassy base Rust has ever seen, post 3-4 screenshots or an MTV-Cribs-style video walkthrough to X tagged @playrust with #Rustmas2025, and compete for £120 of skins plus two DLC/items for the winner (£75 and one DLC/item for the runner-up). Winners were announced from Rust's official account on January 12th.

Steam Awards and the Winter Sale

Rust reached the finalist round of the Steam Awards' "Labor of Love" category that December - a fitting nomination for a 12th year that added a new biome, new animals, vehicles and weapons, plus third-party collabs, KICK drops and charity fundraising. The Steam Winter Sale ran simultaneously with 50% off Rust and the Instruments, Sunburn and Voice Props DLC packs through January 5th - traditionally the moment half the island's population gifts the game to a friend and immediately regrets creating their own future raider.

Looking Ahead

The update's own roadmap notes pointed forward: the Staging Branch wiped on December 25th carrying an early preview of the Deep Sea content that would headline a later patch, and the January patch-plus-wipe landed on January 1st at 1900 GMT.
