The Patrol Helicopter: How to Fight It (or Avoid It)
The Patrol Helicopter can wreck an unprepared base or player. Here's what it actually does and how to deal with it.
The Patrol Helicopter is an NPC-controlled aircraft that roams the map, engaging players and bases it detects. It's one of Rust's more dangerous PvE threats and a serious source of loot if you can bring it down.
What It Does
The helicopter patrols routes across the map and will actively engage armed players and certain bases it flies near, firing at them directly. It also occasionally drops its own loot crate when destroyed — a reward significant enough that groups will specifically hunt it down.
Fighting It
Taking it down usually requires explosive weapons (rockets are the standard choice) and either a coordinated group or a well-prepared solo setup, since the helicopter can output serious damage if you're caught in the open without cover. Fighting from behind solid cover, in short bursts rather than standing exposed, is the safer approach.
When to Avoid It Instead
If you don't have the firepower to bring it down, the smarter move is often avoidance — break line of sight, get to cover, and let it pass rather than engaging a fight you're not equipped to win. It's not required content; plenty of players go entire wipes without ever downing one.
Base Considerations
Some base designs can be vulnerable to the helicopter's attacks if they have too much exposed surface facing open sky or terrain — a factor worth considering alongside raid defense when planning a build in a heavily-patrolled area.
Do I need a group to take down the Patrol Helicopter?
Not strictly, but it's much safer with one — a well-equipped solo player can do it, but the margin for error is much smaller than with a coordinated team splitting the incoming damage and rocket supply.
What's the best cover when fighting it?
Solid natural or building cover you can duck behind between shots — the goal is exposing yourself only briefly to fire, not standing in the open trading damage with it directly.
Is the loot worth the risk?
Generally yes if you're already prepared for it — its crate tends to have some of the better loot available outside major monuments. If you're not prepared, the risk usually isn't worth forcing the fight.
Can the helicopter damage my base?
Depending on exposure and specific server settings, yes — bases with a lot of exposed surface in patrol-heavy areas can take damage, which is worth factoring in if you're building somewhere the helicopter frequently passes.
